Roy is one of the most prominent figures in the world of British taste. He was formerly director of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and has served as president of the Garden History Society.

He is a prolific broadcaster and writer. His countless books include The Renaissance Gardens of England, Gardens through the Ages, and The Roy Strong Diaries.

He lives in Herefordshire where he opens the magnificent formal garden he created with his late wife, Julia, to the paying public.
